Disney+ might be best known for its packed library of family-friendly Pixar films, Disney princesses, and Mickey Mouse cartoons… but don’t be fooled. This phenomenally-popular streaming service, which launched back in March 2020 in the UK to rival Netflix and Prime Video, has a dark underbelly packed with terrifying horror.

And now that Halloween 2021 is here, it’s time to crack open that underbelly and investigate the spookiest offerings from the House Of Mouse. If you love horror films, you’ll want to launch the Star sub-brand within Disney+ that’s home to the more adult-orientated content on the service. If you’re not the bill payer for the account, you might need to ask them to dive into the parental settings to grant you access.

Once that’s done, Express.co.uk has a few suggestions for the best horror films and TV series included as part of your Disney+ subscription…

HALLOWEEN MOVIES ON DISNEY PLUS: JENNIFER’S BODY

After Diablo Cody won over the hearts and minds of indie film lovers everywhere with breakout hit Juno, she moved on to something very different. Her follow-up to the charming indie flick starring Elliot Page and Michael Cera was something altogether different – the comedy-horror Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox as the titular body-owner and Mamma Mia and Mean Girls star Amanda Seyfried.

Directed by Karyn Kusama (The Invitation), Jennifer’s Body has developed into a cult classic over the years, with the film’s strong feminist message being seen in a new light following the Me Too movement.

HALLOWEEN MOVIES ON DISNEY PLUS: READY OR NOT

If you’re excited about the return of the Scream franchise next year, then you may want to see what the filmmakers who are stepping into Wes Craven’s shoes are capable of. Ready or Not, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, is a wickedly funny and entertaining survival horror film starring modern-day scream queen Samara Weaving (The Babysitter, Mayhem).

It follows Weaving’s character Grace on her wedding night, who is forced to take part in a do-or-die game by her new husband’s family. Like beloved modern horrors such as The Guest and Your Next, Ready or Not is a fast-paced thrill-ride that is an absolute blast to watch.

HALLOWEEN MOVIES ON DISNEY PLUS: HOCUS POCUS

Not exactly a scary horror, but Hocus Pocus is an absolute classic that will surely bring a smile to your face this spooky season. The beloved 1993 film stars Bette Midler (Beaches) as a 17th-century witch who is brought back to life in modern-day Salem. Sex and the City‘s Sarah Jessica Parker also stars in the delightful movie.

HALLOWEEN MOVIES ON DISNEY PLUS: 28 DAYS LATER

28 Days Later is Danny Boyle’s seminal horror film set in the aftermath of an outbreak of an incurable virus in London.

The film introduced the idea of fast-moving zombies, ditching the sluggish, lumbering corpses that we’d all become accustomed to thanks to classic horror films like George A Romero’s genre-defining Night of the Living DeadDanny Boyle’s parcour-ing corpses aren’t exactly zombies per se, and the film offers brief glimpses at what might really be behind the outbreak.

The sequel to 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later – not directed by Boyle, is also available on Disney+ as is another great film from the Trainspotting director, the brilliant Sunshine.

HALLOWEEN TV SHOWS ON DISNEY PLUS: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER

Every single episode of the smash-hit 90s TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available on Disney+. An absolutely iconic show which launched Sarah Michelle Gellar into stardom, there are so many brilliant Buffy episodes you can choose to watch for the first time or rewatch.

If you’re looking for something to scare you silly then your best pick is season 4 episode Hush.

In this episode, Buffy and the Scooby Gang are left unable to speak after a group known as The Gentlemen steal the hearts and voices of people in Sunnydale. It’s terrifying stuff, and just one look at The Gentlemen is enough to give you nightmares.

The X Files

The X Files – another iconic 90s show – is also available on Disney Plus (Image: 20TH TELEVISION)

HALLOWEEN TV SHOWS ON DISNEY PLUS: THE X-FILES

Another 90s classic, The X-Files made Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny household names, spawned an extremely catchy Catatonia song and brought the anthology TV show format back into the spotlight. While there are over-arching plot threads, one of the best things about The X Files is you can dip into plenty of episodes without seeing any others.

That’s because the majority of The X Files episodes are self-contained stories.

If you’re wondering where to start, a season one episode entitled Squeeze is a classic monster of the week tale. While if you’re after something truly disturbing, then the season four episode Home is the one you’re after.

The episode, which has an 18 rating for a reason, was banned from being shown on TV after first airing due to it being so controversial.

Thankfully, if you want to see why it caused such a fuss it’s available on Disney+ …but be warned, you need a strong stomach to watch it. It ain’t for the faint of heart.
