The 35-year-old singer made Love for Sale, a collection of Cole Porter classics, with crooner Tony Bennett, 95, who couldn’t be there as he now suffers from Alzheimer’s. But she gave a moving solo performance of the title track – “Tone’s favourite” – and called for applause for “how great Tony Bennett is”.

Gaga – who wore an elegant black evening dress and a shimmering gold gown with a dramatic leg slit – laid on the live show in the company of a big band in partnership with Westfield Century City shopping mall in LA. It was played in their malls around the world.

She said: “Jazz music is the greatest music that I believe exists in America and for us to all be experiencing it together and coming together to watch it, sing it, to listen to it, to cheer for it. This is all that I could hope for. I just want to express my deep gratitude to all the fans that were here tonight.”
